Fellowship Opportunity: The Education of Affectivity and Human Sexuality

Are you a masters or doctoral grad student from the fields of public health, epidemiology, psychology or education?

Would you benefit from working within a multidisciplinary team, in Pamplona, Spain, on the field of the education of affectivity and human sexuality during a 6 month to 2 year period?

The Institute of Culture and Society (ICS) of the University of Navarra (Pamplona, Spain) provides an opportunity for select graduates to work alongside the multidisciplinary experts of the ”Education of Affectivity and Human Sexuality” project, in its different research objectives.

The project of “Education of Affectivity and Human Sexuality”
This project is one of the topics of the area of Family, Education and Society. The general objective of this research project is:

The improvement of the education of the affectivity and sexuality of young people according to the following definition of “sexual health” (WHO, 1974): “the integration of the somatic, emotional, intellectual and social elements of the sexual being by means that are positively enriching and which strengthen personality, communication and love”[1].

We propose the following specific objectives -divided into subprojects each having their own research strategies, production and communication-in order to reach the entire educational community:

1. Strengthen the primary educational activity of parents in the affective-sexual education of their children, in order that they may meet the educational challenges and needs that the current socio-cultural context presents them.

2. Favor the quality of the affective-sexual education which, in a subsidiary and complementary fashion to that provided by parents, is undertaken in educational centers.

3. Affect the social environment of young people in such a way that this environment will reinforce good affective-sexual health and will favor the development of healthy lifestyles, thus strengthening the educational work of parents and educational centers.

The Fellowship
This fellowship is designed to help future professionals in the areas of public health, epidemiology, psychology or education understand the dynamics between parent and school education, social environment and lifestyles and the affectivity and sexuality of youth. Such an understanding will serve participants not only in their personal studies and development but also in their future work as experts in these fields.

Fellows will be expected to participate in ongoing research and scientific publications. These experiences will assist fellows in creating educational resources that will benefit their peers and people working on the fields of youth education or policy makers. There will also be opportunities for fellows to contribute to ICS products and resources for affectivity and sexual education.

Fellows will also have the opportunity to read and attend lectures and briefings to gain a basic familiarity and understanding of the issues described above. An emphasis will be placed on integrating these different issues into a coherent framework and articulating them to a lay audience as they will have the opportunity to work with experts from different fields.
