Resolución de la Asociación Médica Mundial sobre derechos humanos

la 46ª Asamblea General de la AMM, Estocolmo, Suecia, Septiembre 1994

y por 47ª Asamblea Médica Mundial, Bali, Indonesia, setiembre 1995

Considerando que:

1. La Asociación Médica Mundial y sus asociaciones miembros siempre han buscado promover la causa de los derechos humanos para todos y frecuentemente han tomado medidas destinadas a terminar con la violación de los derechos humanos.

2. Los miembros de la profesión médica a menudo son los primeros en constatar las violaciones de los derechos humanos.

3. Las asociaciones médicas tienen un papel esencial que cumplir al llamar la atención sobre dichas violaciones en sus países.

La Asociación Médica Mundial llama nuevamente a sus asociaciones miembros a:

1. Examinar la situación en sus propios países, de manera de asegurar que no se oculten las violaciones por miedo a represiones de parte de las autoridades responsables y solicitar la estricta observación de los derechos humanos y civiles, cuando se descubran las violaciones a estos derechos.

2. Proporcionar orientación ética a los médicos que trabajan en el sistema de prisiones.

3. Proporcionar los medios necesarios para investigar las prácticas no éticas de los médicos, en el campo de los derechos humanos.

4. Hacer todo lo posible para asegurar que se disponga de la atención médica adecuada para todos los seres humanos sin distinción.

5. Protestar contra las presuntas violaciones de derechos humanos a través de comunicados que exhorten al trato humano de los presos y que pidan la liberación inmediata de los detenidos sin causa justa.

and the 47th General Assembly, Bali, Indonesia, September 1995

Having regard to the fact that:

1. The World Medical Association and its member associations have always sought to advance the cause of human rights for all people, and have frequently taken actions endeavoring to alleviate violations of human rights.

2. Members of the medical profession are often amongst the first to become aware of violations of human rights.

3. Medical Associations have an essential role to play in calling attention to such violations in their countries.

The World Medical Association again calls upon its member associations:

1. To review the situation in their own countries so as to ensure that violations are not concealed as a result to fear of reprisals form the responsible authorities and to request strict observance of civil and human rights when violations are discovered.

2. To provide clear ethical advice to doctors working in the prison system.

3. To provide effective machinery for investigating unethical practices by physicians in the field of human rights.

4. To use their best endeavours to ensure that adequate health care is available to all human beings without distinction.

5. To protest alleged human rights violations through communications that urge the humane treatment of prisoners, and that seek the immediate release of those who are imprisoned without just cause.

6. To support individual physicians who call attention to human rights violations in their own countries.
