De Weck / Oehling Collection

Why is it a special collection?

Because it consists of scientific libraries that belonged to professors who donated them to the University of Navarra.
These professors are key figures in the creation and development of Allergology as a distinctive clinical speciality and its consultation will be highly recommendable for those who would like to investigate the early stages of the development of this speciality.

The majority of items are located in the repository of the University Science Library. To order any of these books, they should be requested through the library catalogue and after an hour they will be available for consultation in the Science library.

Biographies:

Prof. A.L. de Weck
Born in Montreux, Switzerland. After specialising in dermatology and pathology at the University of Geneva, he worked as a post-doctoral Resident at Washington University. He took up the post of director of the Allergology Research Unit in the Dermatology Department, at University of Berne in 1961, where he was later both director and professor of the University. In 1984, he was appointed visiting professor of the Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the NIH in Bethesda. In 1992 he was appointed Extraordinary Professor of Immunology and Allergology at the University of Navarra and President of the Gerimmun Foundation, the Allergy Research Laboratory, in Freiburg.

It is also noteworthy that he was a member and chairman of the WHO Committee on immunological methods that control fertility for four years and a member of the Swiss Government Drugs Commission. From 1984 to 1991, he was a member of the German Government Research Commission on AIDS; Chairman of the Experts Committee of the German Ministry of Research and Technology, and a member of the European Community Experts Committee on Allergens from 1992 to 1998. He also belongs to the American and European Academy of Allergology and to numerous prestigious societies of Allergy and Immunology.

His bibliography consist of over 650 original publications.

Prof. Weck has been a pioneering figure in the history of Allergology, establishing the etiopathogenic foundations on medication allergies. He has been recognised as an outstanding visionary, and praised for his patient-centred defence of this speciality in the most important international forums.

Prof. A. Oehling
Born in Granada, Spain, Prof. Oehling first worked as an assistant physician to Professor Ortiz de Landazuri. From 1955 to 1957, he was granted a fellowship at the Higher Council for Scientific Research, and was Head of the Allergology Section at that center. In January 1957, he moved to Germany where he worked for a year at Professor Hansen´s clinic in Lübeck; later, from January 1958 to November 1961, he worked as the Medical Consultant at the Allergie-u. Forschungs Institut u. Asthma Klinik, in Bad Lippspringe (Germany).

Encouraged by his professor and mentor, Professor Ortiz de Landazuri, he moved to Pamplona to start the Department of Allergology at the University Hospital of Navarra,where he held the post of Director until 1998. In addition to being a member of many national and international associations, he has been President of both the World Allergy Organization (1990-94) and the International Association of Asthmology INTERASMA (1984-1987).

Besides an extensive publication record (267 articles, 101 book chapters and 8 books), prof. Oehling has directed 17 doctoral dissertations, which together exemplify his principal contributions to the field: the development of the Allergology speciality in the university sector and of university teaching of the subject, and the establishment of the allergology speciality in Spain and the internship programme in Allergology and Clinical Immunology.
Prof. Oehling founded the journal "Journal of investigational Allergology and Clinical Immunology", the only English-language journal published at the University Hospital of Navarra.
