COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course seeks to provide university students with an in-depth knowledge of diverse areas of English and its development into a global “lingua franca”. Students will acquire basic concepts in linguistics and phonology aimed at improving their oral and written control of the language. They will also acquire basic academic reading, writing and speaking academic skills that will be implemented in short class papers and presentations.
Objectives
CONTENT:
The student will be actively involved in an in-depth study of the English Language by dealing with various fields.
History: a brief introduction to the most important periods in the development of the English language as we know it today. The emphasis will be on understanding why this language has developed in such idiosyncratic ways and its current use as a global lingua franca in its diverse modes.
Linguistics: a study of the principles and processes that govern the English language.
Phonetics and phonology: a study of the phonetic alphabet and its use to improve students’ pronunciation and intonation.
Structure: an in depth analysis of problematical areas for students of English as a foreign language in grammar, word formation and word order.
Contemporary English Use: in and out of class practice through programmed exercises in the use of phrasal verbs, collocations, idioms and vocabulary.
Academic English: Preparation and practice in summary writing, discursive and comparative essay writing in addition to oral presentation skills.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCES:
Development and consolidation of academic writing skills
Development of knowledge in diverse fields of the English language in terms of phonetics and pronunciation, word formation and vocabulary, structure and correct use of the language.
Methodology
-Brief lectures for background information on the basic concepts presented.
-Structure-related, phonetic, and word formation exercises to be done both in and out of regular class time and to be corrected and discussed in class.
-Student participation in class is obligatory in the form of practice work through programmed exercises, short oral presentations, and short written papers throughout ALL of the course.
