Lecturer: Mark Gibson
This course is designed to enhance the student’s theoretical knowledge regarding second language acquisition and the pedagogical practices which foster effective teaching of second languages. Practical pedagogical techniques centered round second language teaching methodologies are also studied. The course is divided into four thematic sections: (1) first language (L1) acquisition, (2) second language (L2) acquisition, (3) issues in second language learning which impact the L2 classroom, and (4) learning models and teaching methodologies. Special attention to issues concerning diversity in the L2 classroom will also be given. The students will utilize the theoretical knowledge attained in order to develop a series of practical activities to use in the L2 classroom. These activities will be catalogued in a professional dossier along with their accompanying lesson plans for the students to use in the future. Critiques of the other students’ activities must also be included. The dossier will be turned in at the end of the course and will count as a substantial percentage of the student’s final mark.
